"Sex sells."

5/1
The common phrase "Sex sells" has been used throughout the generations, just recently being criticized for it's sexism, but the questions I have are why must this sexualisation be forced onto everything we see in the media and what are the causes and effects of this on the general population?

In 2017, David Beckham had caused controversy for posting an Instagram picture where he was seen kissing his daughter on the lips (https://www.instagram.com/p/BUzluYFBQJG/?taken-by=davidbeckham). The controversy was caused through the sexualisation of a simple kiss, or a show of affection, for your daughter none the less, presented in a way in which to cause no harm at all and simply show the love he possess for his daughter. This sexualisation is placed on everything we see and has come to the point where a father, who had no intention of producing content of his daughter to be seen as sexual, is criticized and even receives hate from it. The term "sex sells" can be blamed partially, as in an attempt to sell products advertisers didn't realize they were making those, mainly women, in the ads to become more sensual to amount to what they are viewing on TV. So in order to keep up with these media stunts, people assume that everything and anything is sexual; and based on your perception anything can be turned into something sexual.

The effects of this have to be sifted through in order to find, because as more "sex sells" products are put out there we have to analyze even more effects. In our generation of music, sexual messages are seen everywhere. If you were to go onto billboard 100 or search up top 10 current songs I guarantee you will encounter at least one song with lyrics that sexualised women. This I found actually makes our youth base their worth on their sexuality(Article that shows the effect of sexualisation in media ) and actually causes eating problems and mental health disorders. To conclude, the sexualisation we have imposed in our culture in the end just causes problems; with our youth and with the general population.

  1. Oh my gosh, I definitely agree. I honestly find hyper-sexualization so gross because it makes people feel so uncomfortable in situations that are honestly innocent. For example, the use of the term "daddy" moved from just a cute name kids call their fathers into a widely used sexual term. Honestly, my kids are gonna have to call their dad "pal" or "buddy" or something at this rate. Just look at Toddlers and Tiaras - even little girls that can barely walk are sexualized, and what kind of affect can they have if so much emphasis is placed on physicality and looks? Nothing good, I don't think. It also just enables others to see girls as objects for pleasure rather than as people. Good article, really well written! :D

  2. This post brings up a very good point of some of the issues concerning around sexualisation being forced into everything we see in the media. I agree with your blog and find that it brings attention to an issue that surrounds us today. I wonder how this topic will transform over the years to come.
