A "Baddie" Aesthetic

5/17
Women use their bodies to generate success, it's nothing new. From the recent film watched in my zero period "Merchants of Cool" produced by Frontline, they even talk about the caricature the media created for women, the "midriff." The midriff is a hyper-sexual woman that's perpetually an adult; this caricature however has caused many girls to abandon their childhood.

Girls today care disconcertingly a lot about their appearance, abandoning the childhood tendencies of playing around on the playground with no cares. Kids tend to abandon this around the end of 5th or 6th grade, and it definitely shows during the awkward stages of middle school. However, today children aren't experiencing these awkward stages of finding yourself as they often simply look to media to find their mold. Yes, I say mold because it truly isn't who these girls are. We look to Instagram and see these "Insta Baddies" and try to imitate them; these posts however while allowing us to stay on trend cause younger girls to simply abandon their personality and become these women.
Related image This woman for example, she wears this bodysuit that is actually super pretty but quite inappropriate, especially for the young girls trying to imitate these outfits. This supports the idea that "your body is your best asset" as even here, wearing this outfit, you are getting attention (as anyone would, super cute).
However to the kids that try to copy this I don't think we should be marketing these products; simply because they should live like a child and when they feel like they are actually ready to try new things and feel are done with childhood by all means, but only through their own choice should this be happening not because the media pressures them to. I just feel as though one mustn't give up with their childhood so quick, only to mold themselves into these "insta baddies."

  1. What do you think would happen if there was never another trend? Never another "insta baddie" to look up to? Would these effects be good or would we lose our sense of self?
