How Does Social Media Effect Celebrities?

Recently I was watching a couple videos in which "Celebrities Read Mean Tweets" and in these I noticed the negativity spewed online on the daily, often in the role of a "troll." What I want to know is why does social media give such people so much power? And why does one become a troll? Also how does this impact the celebrities in which these comments are targeted?

In media today, it takes a whole lot of digging in order to find one post or video with any attention not to have a hate comment or a "troll." I've concluded that these internet trolls have actually strengthened the skin of celebrities as they have so much to deal with, and these hate comments pretty much become ineffective. I believe that those online are able to develop a persona that they can't be in real life, maybe someone with enough strength to call out celebrities, all with the protection of being behind a computer. This power of being anonymous then becomes attractive to those who in reality have little power, which I guess is kind of understandable. Nevertheless, their actions do impact those who they target. Many celebrities and people in general, victim of the hate comments, have struggled with dealing with such rude things being said to them. Celebrities, however, seem to cope with these words much easier as in Jimmy Kimmel's videos "Celebrities Read Mean Tweets"(Episode #10) we see many being unfazed by the hateful comments. This made me conclude, the more hate you're exposed to the more you can handle, even so this doesn't give any one the right to be spewing negativity online. I leave this post with this: no one should be subject of negativity, as you never know what can push someone over the edge, still if you are just know you can get through it.

  1. I agree that there is way too much hate being spread online, but I disagree that celebrities handle the negativity better. Many celebrities have opened up about their mental illnesses, including depression and anxiety, that stem from all the attention they receive. If attention in general can hurt mental health, then imagine the effects of the vast quantities of negative comments they have to deal with on an everyday basis. Celebrities might just brush aside the nasty words and say they don't matter, but, like the rest of us, they have feelings which can get easily hurt by trolls.
